The Viva Mayr diet

Goal: To purify the intestinal system

Be aware: this is only the goal of this diet, not necessarily its outcome. Results vary from person to person. Consult your doctor or dietician before starting this (or any other) diet.

The Viva Mayr diet

Different names

The Viva Mayr Diet has several names, including "the F.-X.-Mayr cure," "FX Mayr therapy" and the "Mayr method.

Healthy bowel system

The diet focuses mainly on achieving a healthy bowel system. The idea is that this can be achieved through a detox, an alkaline diet, mindful eating and behavioural changes.

The detox

When following the diet, a detox (or 'cleansing') of the intestines is the start of the diet. This seems to be possible in different ways. One way is to follow a restricted milk and bread diet for about 3 weeks, but a mild variant of intermittent fasting is also mentioned as an option.

An alkaline diet

Part of the Viva Mayr diet is to de-acidify the body. The proposition is that an excess of acidity can exist in the body and that this is not good. This should be solved by eating alkaline (basic) products, just like in the alkaline diet. No scientific evidence is provided for this.

Products that are mentioned as examples of such alkaline products are vegetables, fish, nuts and seeds.

Mindful eating

In the diet it is also advised to eat mindfully, just like in the Mindfulness diet. Mindful eating means that you are aware of what you eat, but also why you eat it.

Read more about mindful eating here.

Behavioural changes

Besides eating differently (and mindfully) there are other behavioural changes that are part of the Viva Mayr diet. For instance, it is important to chew your food 40 to 60 times before swallowing. In addition, you should not drink with a meal, raw food is not eaten after 16:00 and snacking is not allowed.

Products you may or may not consume

As mentioned before, the Viva Mayr diet focuses on eating so-called alkaline products. Besides that, 'whole foods' are preferred. These are unprocessed vegetable products.

Coffee, alcohol, gluten, sugars and dairy products should be avoided.

The VivaMayr Medical Center

In Austria you can find the VivaMayr Medical Center, where you can go to follow the diet. Besides the locations in Austria (Vienna, Altaussee and Maria Wörth), there are other locations of the VivaMayr Medical Center, including one in London.

It is also possible to follow the diet by yourself using the The Viva Mayr Diet book.
