Goal: to achieve your ideal weight

Be aware: this is only the goal of this diet, not necessarily its outcome. Results vary from person to person. Consult your doctor or dietician before starting this (or any other) diet.

The 20/20 Diet

The 20/20 Diet was created by Dr. Phil. The diet consists of 4 phases, of which the first 3 revolve around losing weight. These 3 phases last 30 days in total. In addition, Dr. Phil discusses seven factors in his book that he believes prevent many people from losing weight successfully: hunger, the desire for food/drink, feelings of restriction, the impracticality of dieting, the cost, boredom, temptation and disappointing results. He discusses these factors and gives tips on how to deal with them.

On the homepage you can compare the 20/20 Diet with other diets.

20/20

The first 20 in the name of the diet stands for the 20 products that, according to Dr. Phil, increase your energy burning. In addition, these products should make you feel full. The second 20 stands for the 20 days of the third phase.

Phase 1 (5 days)

In this phase, you eat only the 20 products mentioned above: almonds, apples, leafy vegetables, eggs, protein powder, dried and normal prunes, green tea, cod, chickpeas, coconut oil, lentils, mustard, olive oil, peanut butter, pistachios, rye, sultanas, tofu and yoghurt. When following this diet, you eat 4 meals a day and you make sure that you always have 4 hours between two meals. You are allowed to drink water, green tea and possibly coffee.

Phase 2 (5 days)

In addition to the foods in phase 1, you are now allowed chicken breast, tuna, brown rice, oats, corn, carrots and cashew nuts. Here too you eat 4 meals a day and make sure you keep 4 hours between each meal.

Phase 3 (20 days)

In the third phase you are allowed to eat even more different products. Again, you eat 4 meals a day and keep 4 hours between each meal. You return to phase 1 if you have not reached your ideal weight after 20 days. If you did, you can proceed to phase 4.

Phase 4

This phase is meant to help you maintain your weight. You will continue to eat as you did in phase 3. The book contains recipes to help with this.

In this diet, you use 20 products including coconut oil. According to US guidelines, coconut oil is considered MCT oil, while according to European guidelines, coconut oil falls under saturated fat. Rather choose olive oil which is rich in unsaturated fatty acids instead of saturated fatty acids.
Because you eat 4 meals a day, the portions are on the large side. Also, this diet requires a lot of preparation time which ultimately makes it difficult to keep it up. For some, the choice of a maximum of 20 products will come in handy, while for others it might be disappointing.
