The 'Eat like a bear' community

The Eat Like a Bear community started as a Facebook group by Amanda Rose. The group is described as a weight loss community.

Intermittent fasting, ketogenic food and a gigantic salad

The diet is a combination of intermittent fasting and ketogenic (low-carb) eating. You combine all the food for a day into one big meal, for example in a gigantic salad.

Intermittent fasting

Because you eat only one meal a day, and nothing else for the rest of the day, the diet is a form of intermittent fasting. Amanda says she eats for about an hour a day (and so chooses to eat a very large salad). It is, however, also possible to eat within a 5-hour window.

Ketogenic diet

The aim of the ketogenic diet is to make your body use fats as fuel instead of carbohydrates. Only when there is a shortage of carbohydrates, your body will switch to fat as fuel. With a ketogenic diet you therefore choose to eat a low amount of carbohydrates.

The Eat-like-a-bear diet is, according to its creator, its own version of the ketogenic diet, because it chooses to eat just one big meal a day. This can be, for instance, the 'gigantic salad'.

The ridiculously big salad

A part of the community chooses a ridiculously big salad as their meal of the day. The idea is that you make a gigantic salad that contains all the nutrients and calories you need for the day.

Because it is a ketogenic diet, the salad should be low in carbohydrates. Instead, it should be high in protein (e.g. chicken). The idea is that you use about 170 - 225 grams of protein products. It is also important that you pay attention to how many calories are in the salad.

The 3-day challenge

You can sign up for the 3-day challenge. This is a series of emails that you will receive over the 3-day period explaining what the community eats in a day and how they prepare their meals. You will receive a shopping list of products you need to make the recipes yourself.

Free and paid content

The diet information in the group was free, but as the group has grown, there is also some 'premium content,' which has to be paid for. However, it is not compulsory to choose this if you follow the diet.

Why eat like a bear?

Amanda came up with the name 'Eat Like a Bear Diet' because she was inspired by the way bears eat: they only eat when they need food and they eat enough to survive for a long time, for example before they start hibernating.
