Christian values play an important role in the Shepherd's Diet. For instance, you try to eat like Jesus would eat, you pray for help with the diet and you try to avoid sins like gluttony and laziness.
While following this diet, you try to eat as Jesus would have eaten. According to the authors, this is a mix of the Paleo diet and the Mediterranean diet.
Products mentioned as examples are vegetables, fresh herbs, beans, fruits, nuts and seeds. In addition, sustainably sourced meat and dairy are among the options.
Processed products (such as cornflakes) should be avoided.
Intermittent fasting is included as part of the diet. Under the name 'The Secret of Moses', it is advised to include short periods of fasting in your day. This means that you do not eat anything for certain parts of the day. During these periods you are allowed to drink, but only calorie-free drinks like water or tea or coffee (no sugar or milk).
The secret of Moses should help you lose weight, but also gain more self-discipline.
Trying to eat without sin is part of the programme, along with prayer. One way to avoid gluttony (eating more than you need, for example) is to wait 20 minutes after you have eaten before you eat any more. According to the inventors, it can take a while before you feel satiated from the food you have eaten.
In addition, you focus on self-control, for example by not eating unhealthy products.
While following the diet it is recommended to pray and ask God to help you with the diet. The authors also state that praying helps to reduce stress.
The Shephard's diet can be followed as an online programme. You receive several e-books, for example a booklet with products Jesus would eat, a book about the secret of Moses (intermittent fasting) and a 'Prayer Warrior anti-stress' guide.

The diet has three different phases. The first two phases last about two weeks each. The last phase should last for the rest of your life.
In the first two phases you are not allowed to consume (added) sugars, grains, refined flours and starchy vegetables. These first two phases differ mainly on the spiritual level.
In the third phase you are allowed to eat grains and starchy vegetables again.
