Fruit diet

Goal: to lose weight fast

Be aware: this is only the goal of this diet, not necessarily its outcome. Results vary from person to person. Consult your doctor or dietician before starting this (or any other) diet.

The Fruit diet

The fruit diet is a short diet, lasting a few days to a week. The diet has several variants. As the name suggests, it is a diet in which only (or mainly) fruits are eaten. The aim of the diet is to lose weight fast.

On the homepage you can compare this diet with other diets.

Fruit diet

The name "Fruit diet" is sometimes used as an alternative name for the Fruitarian diet. The fruitarian diet is a diet which does not include any animal products and vital parts of plants. People who have switched completely to this diet are also called fruitarians.

Here, we do not use 'Fruit diet' as an alternative name for the fruitarian diet, but as the name for a short diet of a few days up to a week (the Fruitarian diet has no limited period).

Different variants

There is no official version of the Fruit diet. There are several different versions online. The variants differ in, among other things, how long the diet lasts, which type of fruits you can eat on which day and if you can supplement the diet with other products (like vegetables).

Crash diet and detox

The fruit diet is often called a crash diet, because the diet aims to lose weight quickly in a short period of time. However, several versions of the diet state that you can eat as much fruit as you like, which implies that you can eat as many calories as you like. Hence, it differs per variant if the Fruit diet is a crash diet.

The diet is presented as a detox diet as well. By only eating fruits for a period of time you would "detoxify" your body. How this detox works exactly is unclear.

Don't follow this diet to long

It is advised not to follow the fruit diet for too long. A reason mentioned is that fruit doesn't provide you with all the necessary nutrients. For instance, you get relatively little proteins and fats. Depending on the variant, a maximum period of a few days or a week is mostly recommended. Sometimes the diet can be repeated several times in a row.

Fresh fruit

Besides not following the diet for too long, it is advised to use fruits that are fresh and ripe.

Sample menus for the Fruit diet

There are several Fruit diet sample menus online. Below two examples from the Dutch websites crashdieetinfo.nl and leukafvallen.nl.

Example menu from crashdieetinfo.nl

On crashdieetinfo.nl you can find an example week menu. Below is a brief description.

You should drink about 2 litres a day. This can be water and/or tea. The menu also lists the types of fruit, and how much of it, you can eat.

Day 1 and 2

On the first day, you are allowed 2 pineapples and 2 kilos of strawberries. This can be supplemented with an apple or pear. On the second day you also eat a pineapple, but this time combined with 3 kiwis and 300 grams of strawberries. Additionally, you’re allowed 2 pears as an extra.

Day 3

The third day is divided into breakfast, lunch and dinner. You start the day with a papaya and 100 grams of dried fruit.

For lunch, you eat 3 kiwis and an orange, supplemented with an apple and a pear and for dinner you can eat 3 peaches and 10 fresh apricots.

Day 4 and 5

On the fourth day, 1 banana, 2 mangos, peaches and a maximum of 1 kilo of grapes are on the menu. The next day you eat watermelon (with a maximum of 3 kilos). This may be replaced with strawberries or pineapple if you do not like, or cannot tolerate, watermelon.

Day 6 and 7

On the second to last day you drink 2 glasses of orange juice for breakfast. The rest of the day you eat a pineapple, a papaya and a mango. If you like, you can eat 250 grams of berries as well.

On the last day, you eat 3 kiwis and dried fruits for breakfast. For lunch you make a fruit salad (with a max. weight of 1,5 kilo) consisting of pineapple, pear, pomegranate, nectarine, apple, fresh apricots, strawberries and a small lemon or lime with cherries.
