Fasting mimicking diet

Goal: to lose weight

Be aware: this is only the goal of this diet, not necessarily its outcome. Results vary from person to person. Consult your doctor or dietician before starting this (or any other) diet.

Fasting mimicking diet

The fasting mimicking diet was created by Dr. Valter Longo. The concept of this diet is that you make your body believe that you are fasting.

On the homepage you can compare this diet with other diets.

Five days of mimicking fasting

The diet lasts 5 days in which you consume a (very) low amount of calories. On day 1 you eat around 1100 calories and on days 2-5 around 725 calories a day.

Positive effects

According to Longo, the fasting mimicking diet has several positive effects on your health. It is mentioned, for instance, that you slow down the process of ageing, as the body's cells are occupied with repairing instead of growing. Positive effects on blood sugar and cholesterol are also mentioned.

Note: these are claims from this diet. Please discuss this with your doctor of a dietician, before assuming these claims are true (for you).

Pre-packed meals

The diet is also called the 'ProLon fasting mimicking diet', because the diet includes ProLon products: pre-packaged meals for all 5 days of the diet.

The pre-packaged products for the first day have a total of 1100 calories. For others the meals have a total of 725 calories. There is also a difference in the composition of the meals. On the first day, the calories come from 10% protein, 56% fats and 34% carbohydrates in the meal. The other days it is 9% protein, 44% fats and 47% carbohydrates.

Vegetarian, gluten-free and lactose-free

All ProLon products sold with the diet are vegetarian, gluten-free and lactose-free. The products include soups, bars, drinks and olives. The idea is that you don't eat anything else apart from the ProLon products. Besides this, the advice is to drink enough water alongside the products.

Be aware

Consult your doctor or dietician before starting this (or any) diet, especially if you have diabetes or bowel problems.
