DentalSlim diet control

Goal: to lose weight

Be aware: this is only the goal of this diet, not necessarily its outcome. Results vary from person to person. Consult your doctor or dietician before starting this (or any other) diet.

DentalSlim diet control

DentalSlim is a method in which you are limited to a liquid diet, because your teeth are fixed together with a lock.

Via the homepage you can compare this method with different diets.

A lock on your teeth

Putting a lock on your teeth (also called "jaw wiring") is a way of forcing yourself to eat less. Because your upper and lower teeth are locked together, you are no longer able to eat solid foods. Hence, you are limited to a liquid diet.

University of Otago

Scientists from the University of Otago investigated the use of jaw wiring for weight loss and developed DentalSlim diet control (a medical device) for this purpose.

They investigated whether this is an acceptable method for losing weight. The study was carried out on 7 obese volunteers under the supervision of dentist(s), dietician(s) and doctor(s).

The DentalSlim lock

The DentalSlim lock must be fitted by a dentist. It prevents you from opening your mouth more than 2 millimetres. This is enough space for liquids to pass, but too little to be able to eat any solid foods.

To give you an idea of what the lock looks like, here is an impression:

Emergency situations

The volunteers in the study were given a special tool to remove the lock in an emergency. The lock can be dangerous, for example if you vomit. In that case you can't get the vomit out of your mouth and you might suffocate.

Crash diet

The participants in the study were put on a very low-calorie diet for two weeks after the lock was fitted. Fortisip drinks and Horleys protein shakes were used.

The participants had to limit themselves to 4 Fortisip drinks (with a total of 1200 kilocalories) and 1 protein shake every day. Because the number of calories per day is this low, the diet can be seen as a crash diet.

While following this diet the participants lost, on average, 6.36 kilos.

Limitations due to the lock

Apart from the fact that you can't eat solid foods, there are a few other restrictions. Brushing your teeth on all sides, for example, is no longer possible. Talking is also more difficult and the lock can rub against your cheek in an unpleasant way.

Further research

The possibilities of the lock as a method for losing weight are being investigated further. One option mentioned is to place the lock several times, each time for a limited period.

No books have been written about DentalSlim, but there is a podcast episode (Apple add link) on it. You can listen to that podcast below:

Be aware

Do not just start a method like DentalSlim. As mentioned earlier, the insertion of a lock can be very dangerous. If you want to lose weight and are looking for a method like this, first consult a dietician or discuss it with your doctor.
