Carnivore diet

Goal: to lose weight

Be aware: this is only the goal of this diet, not necessarily its outcome. Results vary from person to person. Consult your doctor or dietician before starting this (or any other) diet.

The Carnivore diet

The Carnivore diet comes in different versions and there are many books to be found about this diet. The variants mainly differ in what kind of meat you can eat and what kind of products you can consumes besides the meat.

The basis of the diet is nicely described in the 'Carnivore formula': The Carnivore diet = water + meat (.... + any extra products).

On the homepage you can compare this diet with other diets.

No (or a few) carbohydrates

The Carnivore diet is similar to the Keto (or ketosis) diet. You eat little or no carbohydrates. The goal behind this is to get the body into a state of ketosis. This is a state in which you burn fats instead of carbohydrates.

Drinking: what you can and cannot do

When you follow the Carnivore diet you mainly drink water. Besides that, you can make a bone broth to drink.

Some versions of the diet allow coffee and tea. All other drinks are not allowed, especially drinks containing sugar.

Food: what you can eat

As far as meat is concerned, the focus is mainly on beef. Lamb, goat meat, venison, pork and chicken are often acceptable as well. In addition, some variants allow processed meat (such as salami or bratwurst) and organ meat (such as liver).

Next to various types of meat, fish, eggs and dairy products are sometimes allowed. These products are mainly allowed because they are fatty products. This fits in with a keto-like diet.

Food: what is not allowed

In short: you are not allowed to eat anything, except meat and some exceptions. You don't eat any (or hardly any) carbohydrates. So no bread, pasta or rice, but also no fruits or vegetables. In addition, alcohol, sauces and spices are usually not allowed.

Some variants also exclude processed meat, organ meat and meat that has been preserved for a long time.

The quantity you consume

The Carnivore diet (generally) has no rules on how much and how often you should eat or drink. The general advice here is: eat until you feel full. The diet has no rules on how many times you can eat a day as well. You can eat whenever you want.

Supplements

Just like dairy products, fish and different kinds of meat, the Carnivore diet differs per variant as to whether supplements are allowed. Examples of supplements which are mentioned (in variants where it is allowed) are Betaine HCl and Ox bile.
