Be aware: this is only the goal of this diet, not necessarily its outcome. Results vary from person to person. Consult your doctor or dietician before starting this (or any other) diet.
The concept of 100% sugar free, also known as the 'Sugar Challenge', was created by Carola van Bemmelen. It is a holistic concept and its goal is to help people get rid of their sugar addiction.
On the homepage you can compare the Sugar challenge with different diets.
The Sugar challenge has been stopped. The concept continues as 'The Happy Eater'.

In the books, Carola says that many products contain (too much) sugar. Because of all those products, we eat an average of 50 kg of sugar per year. This has very negative consequences for our health and our quality of life, according to Carola.
We have a positive relationship with sugar: sugar stands for cosiness and celebration (think of cake, sweets or ice cream). This makes it difficult to avoid sugar.
Many people find it difficult to say no when they are offered a piece of cake during one of these positive moments. It can be annoying to say no. Sometimes it can even be unsympathetic to turn down a piece of cake. So we often say yes to sugar, even though we want to say no.
In short, many people are addicted to sugar. Because many products contain sugar, because we have a positive relationship with sugar and because we are afraid to say no, it is difficult to get rid of this addiction, says Carola.
The goal of 100% sugar free is to get rid of this addiction.
To get rid of the sugar addiction, you have to go through three phases. These are the preparation phase, the sugar-free phase and the sugar-aware phase.
In the preparation phase you prepare yourself (and possibly your family) for the Sugar Challenge (phase 2). You will collect sugar-free recipes, remove sugar-rich products from your kitchen and buy products that are suitable for the challenge. This phase lasts 10 days.
The sugar-free phase is the Sugar Challenge. You will eat (almost) 100% sugar free for 30 days.
In this phase, you learn how to deal with sugar. The underlying goal is to learn to regulate your blood sugar level. A number of rules are presented here, including the 80/20 rule.

The 80/20 rule means that 80% of the time, you do not eat or drink sugar at all. The other 20% of the time you can choose products with sugar and enjoy them.
