Tapeworm diet

Goal: to lose weight

Be aware: this is only the goal of this diet, not necessarily its outcome. Results vary from person to person. Consult your doctor or dietician before starting this (or any other) diet.

The Tapeworm diet

The Tapeworm diet is a radical method to lose weight and is very dangerous. Additionally, it isn’t certain this diet will help you lose weight. In many cases it only causes intestinal and stomach problems.

Very dangerous

An infection with a tapeworm is far from safe. It can even be deadly.

A tapeworm can get outside your digestive system and get into your blood vessels and brain, for example. An infection can lead to cysts in your eyes, spinal cord, liver or brain. You may also experience swollen stomach, gastric and/or intestinal problems.

What are tapeworms?

A tapeworm is a parasite that can live inside your body, usually in your stomach or in your intestines. There are several different species, including the cattle tapeworm, the pig tapeworm and the fish tapeworm, all of which can settle in your digestive system and feed on any food you ingest.

Tapeworms are very long (up to 30 meters) and narrow animals. Hence, they fit easily in your gut.

Eventually, a tapeworm can leave your body through the anus, but it can also be removed through your mouth.

Lose weight

The idea of the Tapeworm diet is that you can lose weight by having a tapeworm in your digestive system. It should eat a part of the food you consume, so you end up absorbing fewer calories.

As mentioned earlier, weight loss is not guaranteed and after the diet you might regain the - potentially- lost kilos, for instance because your diet has not been adjusted after the tapeworm is removed.

Getting infected with a tapeworm

In some counties it is rare that people get infected with a tapeworm. In other countries it happens more often, usually because the food has not been disinfected properly. A typical way of getting a tapeworm is by eating (contaminated) raw meat or by being exposed to (contaminated) faeces.

In addition to contamination through food, it is possible to ingest tapeworm eggs directly. This happens in some clinics that offer the tapeworm diet commercially.

When the diet is finished, antibiotics can be taken to kill the tapeworm. However, the tapeworm still has to leave your body.

Be aware

The tapeworm diet is a radical and dangerous diet. So don't start this diet. If you want to lose weight you can contact a doctor or a dietician.
